Chattering Matte combines live sound, text and video synthesis to create a 22 minute poem-performance which uses the act of "roto-scoping", an animation technique commonly used to trace over real action to simulate another "reality", as a metaphor for contemporary interactions and informational exchanges. The text of the piece comes from various sources and syntactical games: tech jargon and corporate slogans, spam, direct messages from strangers, machine learning runoff and more.
This work was performed live at Roulette Intermedium in 2022 with a custom setup of live cameras, keyers and audio/video synthesis. The above recording has two brief interruptions in which power briefly goes out during the show. These have been left in the recordign to speak to the live nature of the work and the failures inherent to the text itself.
