"Half and Have Knots" is a piece for a string quartet composed from the graphical overlay of the 16 most basic mathematical knot forms. These basic forms are key to the science of topology and furthermore believed to be important in string and quantum mechanics theory.

A quartet from the San Francisco Conservatory was given the piece to perform, but with one caveat. Though their individual parts were complete, each instrument was rhythmically out of sync with the others. It was the quartet's task to "retie" the piece however they wished. The resulting performance comprised the final video, in which the RGB coloration of each performer's video image shifts rapidly in time with red, green and blue areas as they overlap in the original score (see included images of score).
